Overview of the Career Counseling Program

Choosing a career can be one of the most difficult things we do, and yet it often does not get the attention that it so desperately needs. We’re often asked when we’re 17 or 18 years old to pick a path and stick with it. A daunting task, even with helpful resources and information.

Whether you’re graduating high school and exploring the seemingly endless options, or you’re currently on a college campus but considering a change, or even if you’ve begun your career only to find out that it is not aligned with your passions, this program may be for you.

Who is the Career Counseling Program For?

Identity Counseling Psychology’s Career Counseling is geared toward high school and college students, as well as working professionals. The purpose of the program is to identify core strengths and traits that individuals possess, and explore how they may align with critical factors that various careers require in order to be successful.

How Does the Career Counseling Program Work?

Career exploration is done within the context of the person and her/his passions, interests, likes/dislikes, experiences and desires. The program is typically 6-10 one hour weekly sessions. The general structure will look like this…

In the first couple sessions, we’ll meet and talk about you. We’ll cover everything from your interests, likes/dislikes, to how you got to where you are now.

In the next phase, we’ll answer some questions and figure out how your interests compare to various fields of study and work. We’ll spend a good deal of time learning about you and your personality. Whatever you go on to do next, we want to make sure that it is a great fit for you personally. We will also work to identify your key traits, and will attempt to align these traits with factors that employers require in their employees. We will consider both traditional and nontraditional avenues.

Finally, we’ll review the data and discuss the top potential career options that seem to be a great fit for someone like you. It’s important to remember that career exploration is not far away from self-exploration. This process will often lead us down personal roads you may never have considered before.
